I know, right? It drove me nuts. So while hubby was working on stuff downstairs, I stayed out of the way and tackled this.
A coat of primer and two coats of Valspar Signature in satin finish - again with the "Silver Leaf" gray that runs throughout the house. I stained the trim throughout with the same stain we used in the fireplace room beams and bookshelf, the downstairs bathroom and the paneling on the stairs (Rustoleum Ultimate Wood Stain in "Dark Walnut"). By using the same paints and stains throughout the house in different ways, we were able to save a lot of money buying in quantities and not end up with a lot of leftovers.
Three coats of Valspar Gloss in "Kettle Black" on the vanity, mirror and light fixture. I changed out the glass covers on the lights - they match the ones I bought for the dining room fixture and the wall sconces on the stairwell. The pictures do not do this black justice - it really pops and gives these tired wood pieces a high-end, fresh look. It also really makes the countertop look rich. Eventually we will probably replace the sink fixtures to be bronze or brushed stainless to match everything else but they are in great shape so for now we just stained the wooden part of the handles.
New oil-rubbed bronze handles and pulls finish the look - again, the pictures doesn't do justice because of the goofy look the flash gives it.
On the other wall of the room is this bath/shower combo and a closet. Pictures of those will come later. Right now the tub/shower has been ripped out to be replaced in the next couple of weeks. We originally thought we could salvage this and maybe do a refinish on it in white but when we got the hard water stains scrubbed out (thanks Mom!) we discovered that the sides and bottom had substantial chips and pitting. We decided that now was the time to do the replacement since the area had been dry for some time and we did not want to have this leak into the ceiling over the kitchen and fireplace room and ruin our work down there and cause bigger problems in the long run. We also have to paint all the doors - this bathroom has access from the hallway and master bedroom. More to come!
Looks great! You did a wonderful job! Very modern and up-dated now!
